Western Undergraduate Exchange Program (WUE/WICHE)- Looking for a tuition break to attend a school outside of Utah? Check out the WUE/WICHE program
to learn about Rocky Mountain area schools that have made an agreement to encourage and allow students from neighboring states to attend school for a
fraction of the price.
National Merit Scholarship Program- For all students who wish to attend a college/university and have taken the PSAT. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and by meeting published program entry/participation requirements. You must take the Preliminary SAT before your 11th grade year of high school. Click here for the list of requirements.
Questbridge College Prep Scholarship- The QuestBridge College Prep Scholarship is designed to distinguish qualified high school juniors as potential candidates for admission to top colleges, and provides resources to help them get there. Winners of the scholarship could receive one of the following awards: Full Scholarships to College Summer Programs, National College Admissions Conference Invitations, One-on-One College Admissions Counseling, All-Expense-Paid College Visits, Telementoring with College Students, Online Test Preparation, or Quest for Excellence Awards. Students must be juniors who are planning to apply to college during the fall of their senior year.
QuestBridge College Match- QuestBridge is a non-profit program founded in 1994 that helps outstanding students access top-tier educational opportunities. The National College Match allows you to apply early to up to 8 partner colleges and rank them in order of preference. You would “match” to the highest school that appears on your ranked list that also wants to admit you through the College Match. Apply for the National College Match by September 26, 2016.
"Make Your Mark" Bookmark Contest- “Make Your Mark” contest helps encourage Utah families to save for future qualified higher education expenses. Earnings in UESP college savings accounts grow tax-deferred and withdrawals are tax-free if used for eligible higher education expenses such as tuition; mandatory fees; required books, supplies and equipment; and certain room-and-board costs at any eligible education institution in the United States or abroad that participates in federal financial aid programs for students. Each contestant must submit his or her bookmark design on the official UESP and Step Up Utah entry form, available at uesp.org/bookmark. Only one entry per student is allowed. Winners will be notified by October 26, 2015. Deadline: September 30, 2016.
The National YoungArts Foundation- YoungArts identifies and nurtures emerging artists ages 15-18 (or in grades 10-12) in the visual, literary, design and performing arts. Winners in cinematic arts, dance, design, jazz, music, photography, theater, visual arts, voice, and writing are provided once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, significant access to scholarships and national recognition. YoungArts ensures the nation’s most outstanding young artists are encouraged – at critical junctures in their lives – to pursue careers in the arts. Deadline: October 16, 2016.
International High School Essay Contest & the African American Male College Scholarships Competition- The High School Essay contest is open to ANY High School Senior. Locally, three book scholarships will be given to the top essays of students in good academic standing. The local 1st place winner has a chance of winning one of four college scholarships at the National level: 1st Scholarship: $5,000; 2nd Scholarship: $3,000; 3rd Scholarship: $2,000; and 4th Scholarship: $1,000 2) There will be one college scholarships up to $1,000 given to the winner of the African American Male Scholars competition. This scholarship is for a college-bound high school senior in good academic standing. Based upon additional funding, a second and third scholarship may be given to the second and third place contestants. Contest is open to only Utah residents. Horatio Alger Scholarship – For students who have demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity, strength of character, financial need, good academic performance, commitment to pursue a college education, and a desire to contribute to society. Applications must be submitted on-line at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships. The application will require time to complete, including obtaining a letter of support from an adult who understands your adversity and can describe the unique circumstances in your life. Deadline: October 25, 2016.
Award for Aspirations in Computing- The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing honors high school women who are active and interested in computing and technology, and encourages them to pursue their passions. This multi-tiered competition includes recognition at the national level (sponsored by Bank of America) and at the local level (sponsored by Microsoft), serving all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and all U.S. overseas military bases. Any U.S. high school woman with outstanding aptitude and interest in computing is eligible to apply for the Award for Aspirations in Computing. Applications are open online. Deadline: October 26, 2016.
LLS Student of the Year Scholarship- High school students in Utah are being invited to participate in a six-week competition through which candidates will compete for the title of Student of the Year. The candidate who raises the most at the end of the six-week period will be recognized as the Student of the Year and receive a $2,500 scholarship to the college/university of his/her choice. The candidates are chosen by a committee that reviews the applications submitted by the students. LLS is looking for students who are interested in and enthusiastic about service, volunteerism, philanthropy, community outreach, and leadership. The Student of the Year campaign not only offers visibility in the community and local media but also demonstrates excellence in leadership and community engagement for college applications and professional resumes. For students at Salt Lake City Performing Arts High School who already exhibit many of these qualities, this provides a great opportunity to grow personally and support the mission of LLS. Coca-Cola Scholars- For motivated, dedicated, and involved high school seniors. Apply online at www.coca-colascholars.org. Deadline: October 2016.
Voice of Democracy. This is an audio-essay contest open to all grade levels. Applicants will record a 3- to 5-minute essay on a specific theme. Deadline: November 1, 2016.
Prudential Spirit of Community Award- Open to all grade levels. Recognizes outstanding volunteer service. Only two students can be nominated by Cyprus High School; if you are interested in applying, pick up an information flyer at the Counseling Center front desk. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is the United States' largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service. The program was created in 1995 by Prudential in partnership with NASSP to honor middle level and high school students for outstanding service to others at the local, state, and national level. The program's goals are to applaud young people who are already making a positive difference in their towns and neighborhoods and to inspire others to think about how they might contribute to their communities. Deadline: November 2016.
The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program- A constitutional speech contest to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States among high school students. Scholarship awards are presented the the three finalists in the final round of the national contest. Open to all high school students. Competition Date: December. *More information to follow in Fall 2016.
Peterson's Scholarship Giveaway- Enter for your chance to win a $5,000 Peterson's scholarship to help you pay for school. This is a random drawing, so all you have to do is register online for free to be entered! You must be at least 16 years of age in order to be considered for the contest. *Deadline to come Fall 2016
America's Freedom Festival Scholarships- Multiple scholarship opportunities for students. There is an essay, speech, storytelling, video, and art contest that students can enter. Sterling Scholar Award/Scholarship- The Sterling Scholar Awards are open to Utah public high school seniors. It is expected that each school will nominate one candidate in any of the 14 categories. Each school may nominate only one nominee in each of the 14 categories and a nominee may be nominated in only one category. The selection process and nomination of nominees as Sterling Scholar nominees is left entirely up to each high school.
Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program- National program awards college scholarships to high school seniors who embody the characteristics of President Ronald Reagan at school, in the community, in the workplace, and at home. Recipients receive $10,000 renewable scholarships- up to $40,000 per student. Deadline to come January 2017.
Gates Millennium Scholarship Program – For ethnic minority students with 3.30 or higher GPA, demonstrated leadership abilities, and financial need. This scholarship will pay for all college costs for up to 5 years. All forms are available online at www.gmsp.org. Allow plenty of time to complete all forms. Application will open August 1, 2015. Deadline: January 2017.
Ron Brown Scholarship – For African-American seniors who will make significant contributions to society. You must excel academically, exhibit leadership, participate in community service, and have financial need. Deadline: January 9, 2017 for the Ron Brown Scholarship only.
New Century Scholarship- The New Century Scholarship encourages Utah high school students to accelerate their education by earning an Associate degree in high school from an institution within the Utah System of Higher Education. The scholarship may be used at any four-year public college or university in the Utah System of Higher Education, as well as at Brigham Young University-Provo, and Westminster College. Postmarked Deadline: February 1, 2017
Regents' Scholarship- The Regents’ Scholarship encourages Utah high school students to prepare for college academically and financially by taking a core course of study and saving for college. The scholarship may be used at any public college or university in the Utah System of Higher Education, as well as at Brigham Young University-Provo, LDS Business College, and Westminster College. Postmarked Deadline: February 1, 2017.
NAE EngineerGirl Essay Contest- The National Academy of Engineering invites students (both boys and girls) in grades 3-12 to submit an essay about how they would protect the environment and the safety, health, and well-being of the public as a responsible engineer. Cash prizes of $500, $250, and $100 are available for the best essays in each of 3 age categories. Deadline: February 1, 2017.
Rotary Scholarship- The Rotary Club of Salt Lake City is pleased to continue its practice of honoring some of our outstanding senior students with a scholarship for use in connection with continuing their education after high school by attending college. Due to an anonymous donation from a fellow Rotarian of $12,000 this year we are able to increase the amount of the Rotary Scholarships awarded to $2,000 each. Your school will be awarded two scholarships for a total of $4,000. Additionally, the University of Utah Alumni Association is willing once again to match your recipient’s award up to $1,000 per student. Applications need to be turned into Cierra in the Counseling Center and can be found here. Application Deadline: February 5, 2017
Career and Technical Education (CTE) Scholarships and Tuition Awards- The Career and Technical Education Scholarships and Tuition Awards are for outstanding Career and Technical Education (CTE) students. The awards cover UP TO ONE year of tuition only (no other expenses) for those senior students who have excelled in their Career and Technical Education (CTE) areas. Eligible candidates are those who are (1) planning on attending a post-secondary institution in a CTE program that is a two-year Associate Degree program or less (preceding immediate employment in that area) OR (2) those who are planning to teach in a CTE area (a four-year program). All other four-year degree programs will be disqualified. Deadline: February 23, 2017
Stand Up Speak Out Media Contest- The Utah Healthy Relationships Taskforce presents the 2016 media contest, with the theme, Stand Up. Speak Out. For Healthy Relationships. We believe everyone has the power to build healthier, safer communities and schools by promoting healthy relationships and standing up and speaking out when friends or peers are in potentially unhealthy or unsafe situations. In your media piece, show us how we can stand up and speak out about positive, healthy behaviors and stand up and speak out when we see something that isn’t right! The media contests is open to Utah students in grades 7-12. Categories include: Visual Arts: drawings, paintings, posters, photographs, photo documentary, etc. YouTube Videos: PSAs, music videos, etc. (Videos must not exceed 3 minutes.) Written Works: songwriting, poetry, short story, essay, etc. (Must not exceed 500 words). All applicants will need to fill out the Consent Form. Susan W. Coda Scholarship- Provides a one-time merit-based scholarship to an exceptional Utah woman attending a college or university outside the state of Utah. The recipient must be a Utah resident at the time of application and have attended high school or college in Utah. Deadline: March 1, 2017
National High School Essay Contest- The contest is administered by AFSA, with USIP as a core sponsor for 2016-2017. The winner of the contest will receive a $2,500 cash prize, an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., to meet the secretary of state and tour USIP, and a full-tuition paid voyage with Semester at Sea upon the student’s enrollment at an accredited university. The runner-up will receive a $1,250 cash prize and a full scholarship to participate in the International Diplomacy Program of the National Student Leadership Conference. Students are eligible to participate if they are U.S. citizens, their parents/guardians are not in the Foreign Service, and they are in grades nine through twelve. 2016 Utah Young Humanitarian Award- Youthlinc is now accepting applications for the 2015 Utah Young Humanitarian Award, $5,000 college scholarship. All Utah high school juniors, seniors and undergraduate college students who excel at giving back to their communities are eligible. There is one $5,000 winner, one $3,000 runner-up award, and three $1,000 runner-up awards. Go to their website www.youthlinc.org and click on the Young Humanitarian Award for more information. Applications are due (not postmarked by) March 2017. Finalists will be announced at the Youthlinc Annual Benefit, Saturday May 16 at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center.
Jump$tart Scholarship- The Utah Jump$tart Scholarship Competition is designed to recognize students who have demonstrated a solid understanding of financial literacy concepts and are pursuing a post-secondary education. Winners are awarded a $1,000 scholarship. The scholarship may be used for any field of study at an accredited post-secondary institution. The institution must be a Title IV fund-dispersing institution. Applicants must be high school seniors, must have successfully completed or currently enrolled in a financial literacy course, and plan to pursue a post-secondary education. The Utah H.S. Entrepreneur Challenge- The High School Utah Entrepreneur Challenge (HS UEC) is designed to encourage high school students to explore innovation and entrepreneurship and offers over $22,000 in cash and scholarship prizes. Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance Scholarship- The Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance is proud to award $4,000 to one student each semester whose life has been impacted by cancer whether they have dealt with it personally or within their family. Requirements are the student must be enrolled full-time at an accredited two-year or four-year university, community college or junior college, or a graduate degree program. Student must be a United States citizen, in good academic standing, and have a minimum Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher to be eligible. Deadline: March 31, 2017

CampNeuro Salt Lake City Scholarship- CampNeuro, run by local medical students in 28 cities nationwide, is a 1-week summer day camp open to high school students interested in exploring careers in medicine. Open to all high school students (including Spring/Summer 2016 graduates) at least 15 years and older as of first day of assigned session. Spots are limited and filled on a rolling, first-come, first-serve basis. Students that are interested in applying for the camp can find the application information on their website. BYU George Hansen Fellowship Scholarship- For all incoming BYU freshmen who enroll as geology or ear and space science education majors. To be considered to you must meet the following criteria: be a graduating high school senior, enroll as geology or earth and space science education major, continue in one of these majors, maintain at least 3.3 GPA, and abide by all BYU standards of conduct. First Ascent Scholarship- The mission of the First Ascent Scholars Program is to encourage and enable financially in need high-school students to (a) go to college, (b) connect to the University of Utah community, and (c) reach their academic potential. The First Ascent Scholarship will provide students with funds covering unmet financial need, as well as room and board (on campus residency is required for the first 2 years of enrollment), in an effort to ensure students can concentrate on what matters…their education. The student must meet the following guidelines: be a current high school senior, have applied or will apply to the University of Utah, demonstrated interest in business, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and show demonstrated financial need to attend college. College Sports Recruiting Scholarship- College Sports Scholarships is offering a $1,000 scholarship to eligible high school seniors. The College Sports Recruiting Scholarship will be awarded to 1-5 winners each year. To be eligible you must be a current or former high school athlete. New Century Scholarship- The New Century Scholarship encourages Utah high school students to accelerate their education by earning an Associate degree in high school from an institution within the Utah System of Higher Education. NAE EngineerGirl Essay Contest- The National Academy of Engineering invites students (both boys and girls) in grades 3-12 to submit an essay about how they would protect the environment and the safety, health, and well-being of the public as a responsible engineer. Cash prizes of $500, $250, and $100 are available for the best essays in each of 3 age categories. Deadline: February 1, 2017.
Rotary Scholarship- The Rotary Club of Salt Lake City is pleased to continue its practice of honoring some of our outstanding senior students with a scholarship for use in connection with continuing their education after high school by attending college. Due to an anonymous donation from a fellow Rotarian of $12,000 this year we are able to increase the amount of the Rotary Scholarships awarded to $2,000 each. Your school will be awarded two scholarships for a total of $4,000. Additionally, the University of Utah Alumni Association is willing once again to match your recipient’s award up to $1,000 per student. Career and Technical Education (CTE) Scholarships and Tuition Awards- The Career and Technical Education Scholarships and Tuition Awards are for outstanding Career and Technical Education (CTE) students. The awards cover UP TO ONE year of tuition only (no other expenses) for those senior students who have excelled in their Career and Technical Education (CTE) areas. Eligible candidates are those who are (1) planning on attending a post-secondary institution in a CTE program that is a two-year Associate Degree program or less (preceding immediate employment in that area) OR (2) those who are planning to teach in a CTE area (a four-year program). All other four-year degree programs will be disqualified. Deadline: February 23, 2017
Stand Up Speak Out Media Contest- The Utah Healthy Relationships Taskforce presents the 2016 media contest, with the theme, Stand Up. Speak Out. For Healthy Relationships. We believe everyone has the power to build healthier, safer communities and schools by promoting healthy relationships and standing up and speaking out when friends or peers are in potentially unhealthy or unsafe situations. In your media piece, show us how we can stand up and speak out about positive, healthy behaviors and stand up and speak out when we see something that isn’t right! The media contests is open to Utah students in grades 7-12. Categories include: Visual Arts: drawings, paintings, posters, photographs, photo documentary, etc. YouTube Videos: PSAs, music videos, etc. (Videos must not exceed 3 minutes.) Written Works: songwriting, poetry, short story, essay, etc. (Must not exceed 500 words). All applicants will need to fill out the Consent Form. Susan W. Coda Scholarship- Provides a one-time merit-based scholarship to an exceptional Utah woman attending a college or university outside the state of Utah. The recipient must be a Utah resident at the time of application and have attended high school or college in Utah. Deadline: March 1, 2017
National High School Essay Contest- The contest is administered by AFSA, with USIP as a core sponsor for 2016-2017. The winner of the contest will receive a $2,500 cash prize, an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., to meet the secretary of state and tour USIP, and a full-tuition paid voyage with Semester at Sea upon the student’s enrollment at an accredited university. The runner-up will receive a $1,250 cash prize and a full scholarship to participate in the International Diplomacy Program of the National Student Leadership Conference. Students are eligible to participate if they are U.S. citizens, their parents/guardians are not in the Foreign Service, and they are in grades nine through twelve. 2016 Utah Young Humanitarian Award- Youthlinc is now accepting applications for the 2015 Utah Young Humanitarian Award, $5,000 college scholarship. All Utah high school juniors, seniors and undergraduate college students who excel at giving back to their communities are eligible. There is one $5,000 winner, one $3,000 runner-up award, and three $1,000 runner-up awards. Go to their website www.youthlinc.org and click on the Young Humanitarian Award for more information. Jump$tart Scholarship- The Utah Jump$tart Scholarship Competition is designed to recognize students who have demonstrated a solid understanding of financial literacy concepts and are pursuing a post-secondary education. Winners are awarded a $1,000 scholarship. The scholarship may be used for any field of study at an accredited post-secondary institution. The institution must be a Title IV fund-dispersing institution. Applicants must be high school seniors, must have successfully completed or currently enrolled in a financial literacy course, and plan to pursue a post-secondary education. The Utah H.S. Entrepreneur Challenge- The High School Utah Entrepreneur Challenge (HS UEC) is designed to encourage high school students to explore innovation and entrepreneurship and offers over $22,000 in cash and scholarship prizes. Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance Scholarship- The Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance is proud to award $4,000 to one student each semester whose life has been impacted by cancer whether they have dealt with it personally or within their family. Requirements are the student must be enrolled full-time at an accredited two-year or four-year university, community college or junior college, or a graduate degree program. Student must be a United States citizen, in good academic standing, and have a minimum Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher to be eligible. Deadline: March 31, 2017
Scholarship Opportunities for University of Utah College of Science Students:
- ACCESS Program for Women in Science and Mathematics- Award of $3,500. Multiple awards for 2015-16. In addition, a $1,000 housing waiver for students who live on campus during the summer science course. Research laboratory position during first year at the U.
- Sandra J. Bromley Scholarship- Four year award for tuition and fees. One award for incoming freshman majoring in biology, chemistry, mathematics, or physics & astronomy. Minimum GPA of 3.00. The scholarship will pay in-state tuition for up to 15 credit hours per semester for 8 semesters. Preference will be given to mathematics majors and to applicants from single-parent homes.
- Freshman Scholarship in Science and Mathematics- Award of $1,000. Multiple awards will be made to incoming freshman who declare a major in the College of Science.
- Eugene Loh Fly's Cosmic Ray Scholarship- Four year award for tuition and fees. One award for an incoming freshman or current sophomore majoring in biology, chemistry, mathematics, or physics and astronomy. Preference given to chemistry, mathematics, and physics majors. Minimum GPA of 3.5. The scholarship will pay in-state tuition for up to 15 credit hours per semester for 8 semesters.

BYU George Hansen Fellowship Scholarship- For all incoming BYU freshmen who enroll as geology or ear and space science education majors. To be considered to you must meet the following criteria: be a graduating high school senior, enroll as geology or earth and space science education major, continue in one of these majors, maintain at least 3.3 GPA, and abide by all BYU standards of conduct. First Ascent Scholarship- The mission of the First Ascent Scholars Program is to encourage and enable financially in need high-school students to (a) go to college, (b) connect to the University of Utah community, and (c) reach their academic potential. The First Ascent Scholarship will provide students with funds covering unmet financial need, as well as room and board (on campus residency is required for the first 2 years of enrollment), in an effort to ensure students can concentrate on what matters…their education. The student must meet the following guidelines: be a current high school senior, have applied or will apply to the University of Utah, demonstrated interest in business, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and show demonstrated financial need to attend college. College Sports Recruiting Scholarship- College Sports Scholarships is offering a $1,000 scholarship to eligible high school seniors. The College Sports Recruiting Scholarship will be awarded to 1-5 winners each year. To be eligible you must be a current or former high school athlete.
